“Mind Begins to Wander”. I wrote, performed and produced this piece, off and on, from April through August 2010.
In production, the piece started with a strong cinematic feel and it never really changed from that original vision. I love how the piano and zither combine in the intro. It really sets a mood. The bridge is also quite interesting as it moves to a different key and offers a pretty daydream to the character’s dreary life as it is told in the song.
No guitars were injured during this production.
“1 Mile to Lead” - Not a ghost-town per say, but a town of ghosts.
Est. 1890. Elevation 5,213 ft. Former company town for the Homestake Mining Company. There is not one inch of this town that is square or level. My soon-to-be home.

“Queen of the Rodeo”. More precisely, 2010 Miss Rodeo South Dakota McKenzie Haley.
When shooting, my eye looks for the real human spirit which is not always inspirational. Pain, hurt, sadness, bravado, defeat and love are the obvious emotions, but one thing I LOVE to capture is contradiction.
While spending the day behind the chutes at the 2010 Days of 76 Rodeo I kept noticing the rodeo queen. Now a pageant winner (rodeo, beauty or otherwise) is all about the smile, however it was missing this night once McKenzie was out of the public spotlight. Granted there was a lot of bling to draw your attention to her but there was an inherent sadness as she waited behind the scenes. Maybe it was the wear and tear of 7 months of appearances. Maybe she was homesick. Maybe it was because this was her last rodeo as queen.

Hike along Sunshine Creek in Spearfish Canyon until your feet start to go numb. The creek then turns into a series of granite pools and chutes so clear you can see schools of Rainbow Trout flitting about waiting for the water to rise so they may complete their journey. The primordial setting, narrow ledges, and fallen trees pulls you back in time when a child’s mind is simply sated with the elemental action of water on stone.
